How to load a full ChatGPT conversation
ChatGPT loads long conversations one page at a time, so older messages are not in the page until you scroll back far enough to fetch them. Why ChatGPT does not show your older messages
A ChatGPT conversation that has run for months can hold thousands of messages. Sending all of that to the browser at once makes for an enormous page: the tab has to keep every message in memory and recalculate the layout on each keystroke and each streamed token, which is what turns a long thread slow and, eventually, unresponsive.
ChatGPT’s solution is to load a conversation in pages. You get the recent part immediately, and older messages are fetched as you scroll up towards them. That is a sensible default and it genuinely helps — but it has a cost that is easy to feel and hard to work around:
- Your browser’s find bar goes blind. Ctrl+F can only match text that is on the page, so anything not yet loaded simply is not found.
- Getting to the start takes a while. Reaching a message from months ago means scrolling, waiting for a batch, scrolling again, over and over.
- Copying a chat out is tedious. You cannot select what has not been rendered, so a full transcript means loading the entire thread by hand first.
The right amount to load is not the same for every conversation or every machine. That is the whole idea behind the three modes below: it becomes a setting you control rather than a behaviour you receive.

Three ways a long chat can open
Set this once in the extension settings and every conversation follows it. You can still load a single chat in full at any time, whichever mode you are on.
Only load latest X messages
LightestKeeps only the newest messages loaded and switches ChatGPT’s infinite scroll off. Older messages arrive one batch at a time, when you press "Load older messages" at the top of the chat.
Best for: Very long threads on a slower machine, or when you only care about the recent part of a conversation.
Load older messages as you scroll
DefaultLoads another batch automatically whenever you reach the top of what is already loaded. You choose how many messages are in each batch, from 1 to 100.
Best for: Everyday use. This is how ChatGPT behaves on its own, except you control the batch size.
Always open chats with all messages loaded
PROLoads the entire conversation as soon as you open it, filling the messages in above where you are reading, without a page reload.
Best for: Research and long-running threads where you need search and the navigator to cover everything.
A note on loading everything
Loading a whole conversation puts it all back in the page, so on a very long chat and a slower machine the tab can become heavy again — that is the trade the three modes exist to let you make. If you want the entire conversation available to search and to export without keeping it loaded, exporting already covers the entire chat on its own — it fetches the whole conversation when it builds the file. Search covers everything the extension has indexed, and tells you when there is older history it has not seen yet.

How to load an entire chat
Four steps, about a minute in total.
Install the extension
Add Speed Booster Toolkit to Chrome or Firefox and open ChatGPT.
Open the settings
Click the extension icon in your browser toolbar while a ChatGPT tab is open. The settings open on the page itself.
Choose a loading mode
Pick "Only load latest X messages", "Load older messages as you scroll", or "Always open chats with all messages loaded". Set the batch size if you want a different number of messages per load.
Load a full chat when you need it
In any conversation, press "Load all messages" in the ChatGPT header to bring in the whole thread at once.
