Why is ChatGPT slow in long conversations?
ChatGPT gets slow in long conversations because the browser has to hold and re-render the entire loaded thread on every update. The more messages are loaded, the more work each keystroke and each streamed token costs, which shows up as typing lag, stuttering scroll and, in the worst cases, a frozen tab.
ChatGPT’s answer is to load long chats one page at a time, which keeps the tab light but leaves most of the conversation missing from the page — invisible to Ctrl+F and several scrolls away. The fix is to control how much loads, and to make search, navigation and export work across all of it.

What is actually happening
A long thread is a large page
Every message in a loaded conversation is live content in the tab. The browser holds it in memory and recalculates the layout on each new token that streams in and each key you press, so the cost of a small update grows with the length of the thread.
ChatGPT now loads chats in pages
Rather than sending an entire conversation at once, ChatGPT fetches a page of it and pulls older messages in as you scroll back. That keeps the tab lighter, and it is a genuine improvement over loading everything.
But the rest of the chat is then missing
Anything not yet fetched is not in the page. Ctrl+F cannot find it, you cannot jump to it, and copying a long conversation out means scrolling to the top and waiting for batch after batch to arrive.
So the useful setting is "how much"

The direct fix. Keeping only the newest messages loaded makes even a very long chat open quickly and stay responsive.
