Export a ChatGPT conversation to PDF, Markdown, HTML, text or JSON

Speed Booster Toolkit adds an Export button to the ChatGPT header that saves a complete conversation as a PDF, Markdown, HTML, plain text or JSON file. The export covers the whole thread, not only the messages currently on screen, so you do not have to scroll to the top and load everything by hand first.

The file is built inside your browser and downloaded straight to your computer — the conversation is never uploaded anywhere. Exporting is free up to 3 conversations per day with a small watermark; a one-time $7.99 Pro license (down from $19.99) removes the watermark and the limit, and adds exporting several conversations at once as a ZIP.

The background

Why copying a long chat by hand does not work

The obvious way to save a ChatGPT conversation is to select it and copy it. In a short chat that is fine. In a long one it falls apart, for a reason that has nothing to do with your patience: you cannot select text that is not in the page, and ChatGPT only keeps part of a long conversation loaded at a time.

So the manual route turns into a chore with several ways to go wrong:

  • Scroll and wait, repeatedly, until every batch of older messages has been fetched — and start again if the tab reloads.
  • Lose the structure. A copy-paste flattens who said what, and code blocks arrive as a wall of unformatted text.
  • Lose the images. Anything generated in the conversation does not come along with the text.
  • Printing is not much better, since the browser can only print the part of the conversation that is loaded.

Exporting sidesteps all of it. The extension asks ChatGPT for the conversation itself rather than reading the page, so it has the whole thread — including the parts you never scrolled to — and writes it out in one pass with the roles, formatting and images intact.

Five formats

Which format to pick

They all contain the same conversation. The difference is what you plan to do with it afterwards.

PDF

A paginated document with the conversation laid out for reading and printing. Choose portrait or landscape before it is generated. This is the format to use for sharing a chat with someone who will not open it in a text editor, or for keeping a fixed record of one.

Markdown

Plain Markdown with the roles and formatting preserved, which drops straight into Obsidian, Notion, Bear, a Git repository or any note app that reads .md. The usual choice when a conversation is going to become notes rather than an archive.

HTML

A single self-contained page that keeps the formatting, code blocks and images of the original. Open it in any browser, years later, with no software and no account needed.

Plain text

Just the words. No formatting, no markup, nothing that can fail to open. Useful for feeding a conversation to another tool, or for a long-term archive that will outlive every file format opinion.

JSON

The structured version: messages, roles and metadata as data rather than prose. This is what you want if you are going to script something over your conversations, or keep a backup you can process later.

Your conversation is not uploaded to export it

The whole file — including the PDF — is generated by code running in your own browser tab. The conversation never reaches a server of ours, and we have no copy of it at any point. The only request involved is the extension asking ChatGPT for your own conversation, exactly as the ChatGPT page does.

Common questions

How do I export a ChatGPT conversation to PDF?

Open the conversation, press Export in the ChatGPT header, choose PDF, pick portrait or landscape, and the file is generated in your browser and downloaded. No copying and pasting, and no print dialog.

What formats can I export ChatGPT chats to?

PDF, Markdown, HTML, plain text and JSON. Markdown suits note apps like Obsidian and Notion, HTML keeps the formatting and images in a single page, JSON is for scripts and backups, and plain text goes anywhere.

Does the export include the whole conversation?

Yes, including messages that are not currently on screen. The extension loads what it needs before it writes the file, so an export is the full thread rather than only the part your browser happens to have rendered.

Can I export several conversations at once?

Yes, with a Pro license. Select the conversations you want and they are exported together as a ZIP archive. The free tier exports one conversation at a time.

Are exported files watermarked?

Free exports carry a small watermark and are limited to 3 per day. A Pro license removes both the watermark and the daily limit.

Do my conversations get uploaded when I export them?

No. The file is built entirely in your browser and saved straight to your computer. Nothing is uploaded, and we never see the contents of a conversation.
