ChatGPT for students: keep a semester-long study chat fast

Speed Booster Toolkit keeps a term-long ChatGPT study chat fast on modest hardware, and exports it to PDF for revision. Search and the navigator make a term of questions easy to get back to, and none of the parts you use daily are metered on the free tier.

The problem

A semester of study in one chat, on the laptop you have

  • The chat has become slow enough to be annoying on an older laptop.
  • The explanation you need for revision is somewhere in weeks of conversation.
  • Revision notes live in ChatGPT, where you cannot print or annotate them.

Two things make student use different. The first is time: a study chat is not a session, it is a term. By week ten it holds hundreds of exchanges, and the explanation you need for an exam is somewhere in the middle. The second is hardware — a lot of student laptops are several years old, and a very long conversation is precisely the workload that makes an older machine struggle.

Those two pull in opposite directions, which is why a single behaviour cannot serve both. "Only load latest X messages" keeps the page small by default, so a term-long chat opens quickly and stays responsive. When you actually need the history, you press for it — a batch at a time, or the whole conversation at once.

For revision, the useful move is getting the chat out of the browser. A PDF export turns a term of questions and answers into something you can read offline, print, annotate, or put in a folder with the rest of your notes. It covers the entire conversation, not just what happens to be on screen.

All of it is free to use, and the parts you are most likely to want day to day — choosing how chats load, search, and the navigator — have no daily limit at all.

What to use

How the extension fits this work

Four parts, each covered in more detail on its own page.

  1. 01

Make a long chat open small

"Only load latest X messages" keeps the page light on modest hardware, and loads older messages only when you press for them.

  2. 02

    Find that explanation again

Search the whole conversation rather than the visible part, and jump straight to the answer you are looking for.

  3. 03

    Export to PDF for revision

Turn a term’s worth of questions and answers into a PDF you can read offline, print, or annotate like any other set of notes.

  4. 04

    Skim the term by topic

The navigator lists every question you asked with the date beside it, which makes finding the week you need quick.

Common questions

Why is my ChatGPT chat slow on an older laptop?

A long conversation is a large page, and the browser recalculates its layout on every keystroke and every streamed token. The more messages are loaded, the more each small update costs — which is felt first on older hardware. Loading fewer messages is the direct fix, and "Only load latest X messages" does exactly that.

How do I turn a ChatGPT chat into revision notes?

Export it as a PDF. That gives you the whole conversation as a document you can read offline, print or annotate. Markdown is the better choice if the notes are going into an app rather than onto paper.

Is it free for students?

The extension is free to use, with a 7-day trial of the Pro features when you install it. After that the parts you are most likely to use daily — choosing how chats load, full-chat search and the navigator — stay unlimited, with daily limits only on full-chat loads and exports. There is no student-specific discount; the Pro license is a one-time $7.99 for everyone.
