Archive or delete? What happens to a ChatGPT chat
· 3 min read
Archiving takes a chat out of your sidebar and keeps it. Deleting removes it for good. An archived chat still turns up in search and comes back with one click. A deleted chat can’t be brought back, by you or by OpenAI’s support team.
So if there’s any chance you’ll want a chat again, archive it. Delete the ones you’re sure about, and the ones you’d rather not have stored anywhere. Here’s what each one does in detail, as OpenAI’s help centre describes it (read on October 27, 2026).
Side by side
What archiving does
Archiving is tidying, not deleting. Open the ⋯ menu next to a chat in the sidebar and choose Archive; there’s no confirmation. The chat leaves your list but stays in your account, under the same rules as any chat you’ve kept. OpenAI’s words: archiving “does not change its retention period”.
Archived chats remain searchable, so a chat you archived months ago still turns up when you search for something in it. To see them all, open Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats (on some devices it’s View archived chats, with a Manage button). From that list you can open a chat, unarchive it to put it back in your history, or delete it.
One thing to watch: if a chat collects the results of a scheduled task, archiving it can pause the task.
What deleting does
Open the same ⋯ menu and choose Delete, then confirm. On the iPhone and Android apps, press and hold a chat’s title in the history list.
The chat disappears from your account straight away. OpenAI then schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, with two exceptions: a chat that was already de-identified and separated from your account, and one OpenAI has to keep longer for security or legal reasons. Either way, you can’t get it back: not in ChatGPT, and not by asking support.
A few things deleting a chat doesn’t do:
- It doesn’t delete files you saved separately in your Library. Remove those there.
- It doesn’t delete anything in an app you connected to ChatGPT. It removes what the conversation held, not the original.
- It doesn’t remove the chat from a data export you’ve already downloaded.
If you shared the chat with a link, deleting the chat removes the link too. A copy that someone already saved from it stays in their account.
When to choose which
Archive chats that are finished but might matter later: a project you wrapped up, research you might quote, code you might need again. It costs nothing, and search still finds them.
Delete chats you’re sure you won’t need, and anything with details you’d rather not keep stored: passwords pasted by mistake, health or money questions, other people’s information. Deleting is the only one of the two that removes the chat from OpenAI’s systems.
Not sure? Save a copy first, then delete. A chat exported as a PDF or Markdown file is yours to keep, wherever you keep your files. ChatGPT’s own data export gives you every chat at once (Settings › Data controls › Export data), and our free export viewer lets you read and search it.
Delete all chats can’t be undone
It deletes every chat in your account or workspace, including the ones in Projects. If you only want a cleaner sidebar, Archive all chats does that and keeps everything.
Doing either to many chats at once
ChatGPT gives you two choices: one chat at a time, or every chat you have. There’s nothing for “these forty, but not the rest”.
That’s the gap Speed Booster Toolkit fills. In ChatGPT’s sidebar, tick the chats you want, Shift-tick to take every chat between two, and archive or delete them all from the bar at the bottom. Delete still asks first, and you can move or export the same selection instead. It’s free, with no limit on how many you select. The step-by-step guide shows how.
