“The conversation is too long”: how to carry on in a new chat
Updated
The message means this chat has reached its maximum length, and ChatGPT won’t add anything more to it. No setting changes that, and OpenAI doesn’t publish where the limit is. What you can do is move the conversation into a new chat, with enough of it that ChatGPT carries on where you left off.
The best way is to save the whole chat as a file and give that file to a new chat. Do it soon: some people find that chats which hit the limit stop opening later on.
What the message means
The chat is full, not broken
The full message reads “The conversation is too long, please start a new one.” Each time you send a message, the conversation before it goes along too, and a single chat can only get so long. OpenAI’s support staff answer it the same way every time: start a new conversation (OpenAI community).
It’s about this one chat
Deleting other chats won’t make room. Long answers, pasted documents and code fill a chat much faster than short questions do, which is why some chats reach the limit sooner than others.
The page slows down first
Long before the limit, a big chat makes typing and scrolling lag, because your browser holds every message in memory. That part can be fixed (why ChatGPT is slow).
Some full chats won’t reopen
People on OpenAI’s forum report chats that later showed the same message when opened, then sent them to a new chat, and weren’t in their data export either (the thread). OpenAI’s support asks for a ticket with the chat’s link when that happens.
How to continue in a new chat without losing the thread
- Save the whole chat as a file. With Speed Booster Toolkit, open the chat, press Export and choose Markdown. Without it, select the conversation and copy it into a document, a screen at a time.
- Open a new chat (Ctrl+Shift+O, or Cmd+Shift+O on a Mac) and attach the file with the + button, or drag it into the message box.
- Tell ChatGPT what it is, for example: “This file is our earlier conversation. Read it, then sum up where we left off and what we decided, so we can carry on.”
- Check its summary against what you remember, correct anything it got wrong, and continue from there.
Other ways to keep the context
| Way | What carries over | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Attach the exported chat | Every message, word for word | Chats full of details, code or decisions you’ll need again |
| Ask for a summary before the limit | The main points, in ChatGPT’s words | A chat that’s getting long but still takes messages |
| Add the file to a Project | The file, for every chat in the Project | Work that will run to many chats, all needing the same background |
| Start over and explain again | Only what you remember to say | Short chats, or ones that went off track anyway |
A very long chat makes a long file. If ChatGPT seems to miss parts of it, ask about the part you need, or export only the messages that matter: Pro lets you pick them.
Saving the whole chat as a file
End of week 6. It needs screenshots, the final pricing, two customer quotes and a short story of why you built it.
Q3 launch on one page: research in weeks 1–2, pricing locked by week 4, a 200-team beta in weeks 5–6, the press kit by the end of week 6, and launch on the Tuesday of week 8.
Save long chats you care about now
Don’t wait for the message. A chat that hits the limit may not open again, and it may be missing from ChatGPT’s own data export. A Markdown or PDF copy on your computer stays readable whatever happens to the chat (how to save a chat).
Common questions
What does “The conversation is too long, please start a new one” mean?
That the chat has reached the most ChatGPT will hold in one conversation, so it won’t take another message. Start a new chat, and bring the old one along as a file or a summary so you keep the context.
How long can a ChatGPT conversation be?
OpenAI doesn’t publish a number. It depends on how much text the chat holds rather than on how many messages: long answers, pasted documents and code fill it faster.
Can I keep going in a chat that’s too long?
Not in that chat. Start a new one and attach the old one as a file, or paste in a summary, and carry on there.
Will I lose the old chat?
It stays in your history, and usually you can still read it. Some people report that chats which hit the limit stopped opening later, so export any you’d hate to lose.
Can Speed Booster Toolkit raise the limit?
No, and nothing can: the limit is on OpenAI’s side. What it does is keep long chats quick to work in until then, and save the whole chat as a file in one click, so moving to a new chat takes a minute.
