ChatGPT chat not loading? How to open a stuck or blank chat

A chat that won’t load is nearly always one of three things: ChatGPT itself is having trouble, the chat is too big for the page, or something in your browser is in the way. What you see tells you which.
Start with the table, then work down the fixes. The first ones take seconds, and none of them deletes anything.

Fixes to try, in order
- Check status.openai.com. If ChatGPT is down, nothing on your side will help, and it usually comes back on its own.
- Reload the page (Ctrl+R, or Cmd+R on a Mac). If ChatGPT shows Retry, press it first.
- Open the chat in a private window, where most extensions are off. If it loads there, one of your extensions is the cause: switch them off one at a time to find it.
- Sign out of ChatGPT and back in.
- Try another browser, or the ChatGPT app on your phone. If the chat opens there, the problem is in the first browser.
- Clear the browser’s stored data for chatgpt.com only, in its site settings. You’ll be signed out; your chats are kept on OpenAI’s servers and aren’t touched.
When it’s one long chat
A chat with hundreds of long answers is a heavy page. Your browser has to draw every message and keep it in memory, and on an older laptop that can take long enough to look like nothing is happening. If it does open, typing in it lags too.

Common questions
Why won’t my ChatGPT conversation load?
If no chat loads, ChatGPT is probably having an outage: check status.openai.com. If only one long chat won’t open, it’s too heavy for the page; load fewer of its messages at once. If it opens in a private window but not in your normal one, an extension or stored site data is in the way.
Why is my ChatGPT chat blank?
Usually the page didn’t finish loading: reload it, and check ChatGPT’s status page. A chat that shows “The conversation is too long” and then goes blank has hit its length limit; that one needs a new chat.
Does clearing my cache delete my ChatGPT chats?
No. Your chats are stored with your account on OpenAI’s servers. Clearing your browser’s data for chatgpt.com only signs you out; sign back in and they’re all there.
Is ChatGPT down right now?
OpenAI’s status page, status.openai.com, says whether ChatGPT is working and lists any incident in progress.
