How to get your ChatGPT export
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, and press Export data. Confirm.
- Wait for the email. It usually comes within minutes; a long history can take longer.
- Download the ZIP from the link in the email. The link works for 24 hours.
- Choose the ZIP on this page. There’s no need to unzip it.

The export is a copy of what’s on your account. Chats you deleted before exporting aren’t in it.

Common questions
How do I open a ChatGPT conversations.json file?
Choose it on this page, or the ZIP it came in, and every chat is listed, newest first. Click one to read it, or search titles and messages.
Is my ChatGPT export uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser reads the file on your computer; nothing is sent to a server. Once the page has loaded it works with your internet switched off.
Can I convert my ChatGPT export to Markdown?
Yes. Download any chat as a .md file, copy it as Markdown, or download every chat at once as a ZIP with one Markdown file per chat.
Can I save a chat from my export as a PDF?
Yes. Open the chat, press Save as PDF, and choose “Save as PDF” in the print window.
Why don’t I see every version of a message?
When you edit a message or regenerate an answer, ChatGPT keeps the other versions in the export. The viewer shows the version you last had on screen, the way ChatGPT does, and leaves out tool calls and hidden reasoning.
Can it open a very large export?
Large exports take a few seconds to open. A ZIP over 4 GB can’t be read directly: unzip it first and choose conversations.json.
