How to find an old ChatGPT chat

Press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on a Mac) and type a word you remember from the chat. ChatGPT’s search matches words in your messages as well as in titles, and archived chats too. Pick an unusual word: a name, a product, a phrase from the answer. The title ChatGPT gave the chat is often not what you’d guess.
If search doesn’t find it, the chat is almost always archived, in a Project, or on a different account you sometimes sign in with. Here’s where to look.
Not in search? Check these
Archived chats
Open Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats (on some devices View archived chats). Archived chats leave the sidebar but are never deleted, and Unarchive puts one back.
Another account
Each email address is its own ChatGPT account. If you have more than one, or sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft on some devices and a password on others, check which account you’re in. The same goes for a work or school workspace.
A locked chat
Locked chats are left out of ordinary search on purpose. They’re under Projects, then Locked chats, behind your account PIN.
Inside a Project
Chats you started in a Project, or moved into one, are listed under that Project in the sidebar. Open each Project you have and look there.
A temporary chat
A chat started with Temporary switched on is never saved to your history, unless you saved it before leaving. There’s nothing to find.
A page that hasn’t caught up
Reload ChatGPT, or sign out and back in, and check status.openai.com in case something is wrong on OpenAI’s side.
Deleted
A deleted chat can’t be brought back, by you or by OpenAI’s support. If you deleted it, it’s gone (archive or delete?).
Search every chat you’ve ever had, word for word
- In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, and press Export data.
- Download the ZIP from the email OpenAI sends you. The link works for 24 hours.

So you never have to hunt again

Common questions
Why did my ChatGPT chats disappear?
Most often they were archived, they’re inside a Project, or you’re signed in to a different account than usual. Check Settings, Data controls, Archived chats, then the email address on the account. Deleted chats and temporary chats can’t be brought back.
Can I recover a deleted ChatGPT chat?
No. OpenAI says deleted chats can’t be restored, in ChatGPT or through its support team. A copy you exported before deleting is the only way back.
Does ChatGPT search include archived chats?
Yes. Archived chats stay searchable, and search matches words in the messages as well as the title. Deleted and locked chats don’t show up.
How do I find a chat from months ago?
Search for an unusual word from it with Ctrl+K or Cmd+K. If that fails, download your data export and search every message in it with a viewer such as our free ChatGPT export viewer.
Where are temporary chats saved?
