ChatGPT shared links: who can see them, and how to delete them

· 3 min read

On a personal account, anyone who has the link can open it and read what you shared. It doesn’t matter who you sent it to: if the link gets forwarded or posted somewhere, whoever clicks it sees the conversation.

Every link you’ve made is listed in one place, and you can delete any of them, or all of them, in a few clicks. Here’s what a link shows, who can open it, and how to take it back, as OpenAI’s help centre describes it (read on October 27, 2026).

On a personal account, a link is a snapshot. It shows the conversation as it was when you made the link, and messages you add afterwards aren’t included. To share the newer version, open the chat, press Share and choose Update link.

A link can also include images and files you uploaded in the chat. Links are anonymous by default, but anything you typed is visible, names and personal details included. OpenAI notes that some older ways of sharing may show your name, so look at the preview before you send it.

You can also share a single answer rather than the whole conversation, where ChatGPT offers it.

If someone carries on the conversation from your link, ChatGPT makes them a separate, private copy in their own account. Nothing they write is added to yours.

Who can open it

On a work workspace, keep that last column in mind: a link you shared with colleagues can show what you add to the conversation afterwards.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Data controls.
  3. Next to Shared links, press Manage.

The list has every conversation you’ve shared, and any scheduled tasks too.

In that list, press Delete shared link next to the one you want gone. To remove them all, open More actions and choose Delete all shared links.

What deleting a link does, and doesn’t do:

  • The link stops working for everyone, straight away.
  • Your conversation stays in your history. Only the link goes.
  • A copy someone already made from it stays in their account.

Deleting the conversation itself also removes its link. And if you delete your ChatGPT account, every conversation link you made goes with it.

Locking a chat doesn’t take its link down

People who have the link can still read what was shared. New messages in a locked chat aren’t added, but to stop access you have to delete the link as well.

Before you share

OpenAI’s own advice is to leave out health information, financial details, passwords and account numbers. Read the preview from top to bottom before you copy the link: it’s easy to forget what you pasted forty messages ago.

Sometimes a file is the better thing to send. A PDF of the chat doesn’t change after you send it, there’s no link to forward or to remember to delete, and the person you send it to doesn’t need ChatGPT to read it. With Speed Booster Toolkit that’s one click from the chat, and Pro lets you pick exactly which messages go in. For a single answer, paste it into the free ChatGPT to PDF converter instead.
